counterclaim

When the defendant, along with filing an answer to plaintiff's complaint, asks the judge to order the plaintiff to do or pay something. The counterclaim must be related to the facts and events in the plaintiff's compalint. If defendant files a counterclaim, the case can continue even if plaintiff decides to drop it.
