beyond a reasonable doubt

The highest standard of proof in the U.S. legal system. It is used in criminal cases and criminal contempt of court hearings. It means that evidence has to show there could be no reasonable doubt that the government's version of events are true. There can still be a doubt, but only one that would not affect a reasonable person's belief.
